Caring for the elderly is never easy, and it is sad to see your loved ones becoming frail and forgetful. Caring for aging parents in your own home adds an extra layer of complexity to the situation, but some want to do this to make sure that their family can get the best care possible. It might be easy to forget, however, that your home most likely isn’t set up for the needs and limitations of older ones.
If you have stairs, for example, these pose a great danger to older ones with limited vision, as well as, poor balance. If, on top of their physical limitations, they also have cognitive issues, they might wander onto the stairs without noticing.
It is wise to have some type of barrier, preventing them from having a fall down the stairs, and if possible, they should spend their time on the ground level.
Another common area for accidents in the home is the bathroom. Installing bars for support along the walls so an older one can use those for support will be a great help. You should also have an anti-slip surface in your shower.
